Summary

During the setup process for the Epson ES-580W scanner, it is common to enable the USB and/or WiFi functionality. The WiFi operation may be slower than USB. Also, other users with the same Epson software and same model of scanner could get confused by seeing two available ES-580W units to choose from if prompted by the software to choose a scanner on the network. This document explains how to disable the WiFi connection on the scanner. More information is available in the Epson ES-580W manual.

WiFi Disable Instructions

Follow the steps below to disable the WiFi connection.

  1. From the main menu on the scanner, touch the icon in the top row on the left. It has a WiFi signal arched lines symbol on it as shown above.
  2. Tap on the Router button. If your scanner is already connected to WiFi, the Router button will be dark blue.
  3. Tap the dark blue button at the bottom of the screen that says “Change Settings” to open the settings menu.
  4. On the Settings page, you will probably see three buttons, “Wi-Fi Setup Wizard” and “Push Button Setup(WPS)” and “Others” — tap on the Others button.
  5. On the Others menu, tap on the “Disable Wi-Fi” button.
  6. The next screen will be a little confusing. You’ll see a message “Disable WiFi?” and no button on the screen that says “Yes” but instead a dark blue button that says “Start Setup” — Press the Start Setup button.
  7. There will be no confirmation message stating “WiFi is now disabled. Congratulations” or anything like that. Instead, you’ll be abruptly taken to the “Network Connection Settings” menu. Notice that the Router and WiFi Direct buttons are gray to indicate that they are not being used. You could press Router to setup WiFi again, but for now you can just press the Home icon in the top left to return to the home menu screen.

Conclusion

As you go through experiences like the one above, you will begin to better anticipate the types of non-intuitive poorly designed menus, interfaces, processes, and procedures that are commonly encountered with computers. It’s good to document processes, and study them a bit. Each new encounter with a confusing tech issue then perhaps become a little easier to diagnose and navigate.

AI Instructions Incorrect

Sometimes AI instructions can be very helpful and accurate, in this case they weren’t. As of 19 Dec 2024, the instructions produced by AI system may tell you to press and hold the WiFi icon for three seconds to turn off WiFi. This does not seem to be correct for the ES-580W. For this reason, the above document has been written by hand and thoroughly reviewed and tested for accuracy.
