Summary

Your cell phone service includes access to the Internet, usually with limited speed and a limited amount of data. Unlimited plans slow down after a certain amount has been used.

For this reason, whenever possible, using WiFi service will help your phone work faster and reduce the amount of data used on your cell phone plan.

Example

If you are a Verizon customer on an older cell phone plan, with a data cap of 6GB, then you will want to use WiFi whenever available.

Turning on WiFi and Connecting

Computers, cell phones, tablets and other devices can use WiFi for accessing the Internet. Follow these steps on your iPhone (or iPad) to connect to local WiFi:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Wi-Fi to view the WiFi options.
  3. If you are already connected to a WiFi network, the Wi-Fi switch will be on, and a checkmark will be next to the desired wireless network. If not connected already, continue to the next step.
  4. From the available networks, tap on the network you want to connect to and enter the password when prompted.

Note: The term Wi-Fi or WiFi are sometimes written with a hyphen and sometimes without. In the document above, the term WiFi is used to generally refer to the service and the term Wi-Fi (with a hyphen) indicates the setting in your iPhone.
